Yes, they realize. And why do they do it? Because conflict drives clicks, and the more people share it the more popular the person becomes. Popularity is not likeability, it recognizability.

I think this may be true for some, japhethwg, but I’m guessing that a certain percentage post this stuff because they are “true believers,” and don’t realize the effect.
